The method of symmetrical components has been an important tool for the study of unbalanced three-phase systems, unsymmetrical short-circuit currents, models of rotating machines and transmission lines, etc. This chapter studies three-phase balanced systems, by considering these as single-phase system.
Emphasizing a practical conception of system unbalances, basic circuits, and calculations, this essential reference/text presents the foundations of symmetrical components with a review of per unit (percent), phasors, and polarity--keeping the mathematics as simple as possible throughout. According to IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine, this book "provides students and

Tutorial on Symmetrical Components Part 2: Answer Key Ariana Amberg and Alex Rangel, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. Abstract—Symmetrical components and the per-unit system are two of the most fundamental and necessary types of of power systems under faulted or other unbalanced conditions. Once the system is solved in the

In electrical engineering, the method of symmetrical components simplifies analysis of unbalanced three-phase power systems under both normal and abnormal conditions. The basic idea is that an asymmetrical set of N phasors can be expressed as a linear combination of N symmetrical sets of phasors by means of a complex linear transformation.
The third is called the zero-sequence system because the phasors have the same phase angle and rotate together. It is also a sequence not generated by the system voltage. Collectively, they are the symmetrical components. I. c1. I. a1. I. b2. I. b0. I. c0. I. b1. I. a0. I. a2. I. c2. I. a = 3I. a0. I. b = 0 I. c = 0. Figure 4 Adding Symmetrical

SYMMETRICAL COMPONENTS T he method of symmetrical components, first developed by C. L. Fortescue in 1918, is a powerful technique for analyzing unbalanced three-phase sys-tems. Fortescue defined a linear transformation from phase components to a new set of components called symmetrical components. The advantage of this

... When a fault occurs in a hybrid ac/dc system, different symmetrical components, i.e., positive-sequence, negativesequence, and zero-sequence, may appear depending on the fault type. However, the positive-sequence component is the only one that appears in all types of faults .

However, power networks can be come quite complex and many situations would be very difficult to handle using ordinary network analysis. For this reason, a technique which has come to be called symmetrical components has been developed. Symmetrical components, in addition to being a powerful analytical tool, is also conceptually useful.
