In power system analysis, computer techniques are used to handle the complexity of the power system network. The elements in the network, such as lines and transformers, have impedances that depend on their orientations. If the elements have the same orientations when emanating from a bus, the mutual impedance will have a positive value; and if the elements have opposite orientations, the corresponding mutual impedance will have a negative value.
